Trekking across the High Atlas

Viewed from Marrakech, Morocco's snow-capped Atlas mountains provide inspiration for a fantastic trekking holiday in Morocco. Our stunning trekking itinerary begins in the picturesque Bou Guemmez Valley and leads south-westwards through the impressive Atlas range, which includes North Africa's highest peak. Jebel Sahro Winter Sunshine Trek

Wonderful trekking adventure holiday walking amongst the mountains of the Jebel Sahro in Morocco. Sandwiched between the High Atlas Mountains of Morocco and the Sahara, the remote mountain region of Jebel Sahro is the perfect destination for winter sunshine trekking. Mgoun, Toubkal and Essaouira

This magical and challenging 2-week taste of Morocco begins with a journey to the enchanting Bou Gemmez Valley, the starting point for a 5-day traverse of Mgoun (4068m), North Africa's second highest summit. Taking us up onto the high pastures of the Berber Shepherds and including the passage of the Mgoun Gorge, this trek reaches its conclusion amongst timeless villages on the south side of the Atlas. We then transfer, via the edge of the Sahara to Imlil, at the foot of Mount Toubkal (4167m), Morocco's highest peak. We have allowed 2 days for the summit attempt, sure to be the highpoint of the holiday! Then heading to the Atlantic coast, a 3-day trek takes us north across the wild sand dune and rocky cape landscape to the laid-back port town of Essaouira. Returning to Marrakech the following day, we have ample time to explore the maze of souks and reflect upon our experience of this colourful and friendly country.

High Atlas Trek

On this trek we walk through the rugged terrain of Morocco's highest mountain range. We stay in village houses, meet the local Berber people and discover the wilderness of the High Atlas. We have the option to climb to the summit of Mount Toubkal (4167m), the highest peak in North Africa, and we explore the souks and medina of the 'Red City' of Marrakech.

Trips of 8 to 34 days in Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, Peru & Bolivia. These adventure trips use local transport and sometimes private minibuses. You will stay in locally run and owned hostels and hotels allowing interaction with local communities, as well as the occasional night camping (for example on the Inca Trail). Group size is limited to 18 people per Tour Leader in order to maximise your enjoyment at local sites.

Trekking Mount Mgoun in Winter

The Atlas range of mountains is the largest in all Africa, extending through Morocco for some 500 kilometres north-east to south-west and characterised by steep sided valleys, rocky peaks, and the picturesque terracotta-coloured villages of the Berber people. From November to April, the snow-covered peaks of the Atlas provide a fantastic range of options for the winter hillwalker. The winter ascent of Mgoun takes us away from the crowded area around Toubkal to an unspoilt and less visited region of the Central Atlas. Starting in the warm climes and irrigated farmland of the Bougmez, known as ‘The Happy Valley', we will experience the friendliness and hospitality of the Berber people before heading up above the snow line, crossing the Tizi n' Oughri (3400m) to the Tarkeddit Refuge. From here, we make the challenging ascent of Mgoun (4068m), Morocco's third highest summit, but the second highest summit outside of the Toubkal massif. The summit offers a fabulous 360 degree panorama including range upon range of Atlas peaks and the endless desert expanse to the south. We return to the Bougmez Valley for a night and then this superb trip concludes with a drive back to Marrakech, visiting the spectacular waterfalls at Ouzoud. Although this trekking holiday involves negotiating easy-angled snow slopes there is no technical climbing involved and while an ice-axe and crampons will be used, previous experience of winter mountaineering is not required but is recommended. Fully guided this is a short, challenging and very special winter walking break. Mgoun Traverse - High Atlas Trek

A new and challenging walking adventure holiday in the High Atlas Mountains of Morocco, trekking to the summit of Mgoun and more! Our special trekking route takes us from north to south walking across the less visited central part of the High Atlas Mountains of Morocco, from the irrigated farmland of the Bou Guemmez Valley to the edge of the Sahara. During our walks, we experience the friendliness and hospitality of the Berber people, camp on high pastures used by nomadic shepherds and make the tough trek to the top of Mgoun, the fourth highest peak in Morocco. Here, the fabulous 360 degree panorama includes range upon range of the High Atlas Mountains and the endless desert expanse to the south. Dropping down via a high plateau, we explore the dramatic MGoun Gorge and walking through this, at times in the river bed, to reach the end of our trekking amongst a collection of pretty villages whose terraced fields and gardens are bordered by rose bushes. Jebel Sahro Walking Week

South of the Atlas Mountains, the Jebel Sahro is a mountainous region of volcanic origin that makes an excellent destination for some winter sunshine, culture and exercise. This is a rugged world of gorges, rock spires and mesas that shelters a number of picturesque Berber villages. Starting in Marrakech, we cross the Atlas at the Tizi n'Tichka (2260m) and traverse the Dades Valley with its kasbahs and palm groves to reach the start of our walk. For 4 days, we head south on quiet trails through the Sahro, crossing remote uplands and camping beside the stone-built summer settlements or ‘azibs' of the Berbers. Beyond our high point at the summit of Kouaouch (2600m), where the views encompass the snow-capped summit of Jebel Mgoun, our trek continues by way of the spectacular twin towers known as Bab n'Ali (Ali's Gate). Including the chance to do some sightseeing in Marrakech, this holiday can also be combined with the Dunes of Chegaga Trek.

Peaks and Valleys of Jebel Sirwa

Lying between the High Atlas and the Anti-Atlas, the extinct volcano of Jebel Sirwa is the high point of a rarely visited mountainous area that boasts some of Morocco's finest trekking. Home to the Ait Ouaouzguit Berbers, famed for their hand-woven rugs, this region has a distinctive landscape of high ridges and deep valleys, with flower-filled pastures, superb dry-stone villages and terraced fields of barley and saffron. Starting out on the south side of the range, this winter sunshine trekking holiday walks via Tislit and Aghbalou Tizgui to the summit of Guilliz (2900m), then down to a camp close to the summer shepherd's encampment at Azib Tagrara. Continuing amongst splendid rock formations, the holiday culminates in an ascent of Jebel Sirwa (3305m), where the views include many of the High Atlas peaks. A get-away-from-it-all holiday with six days of varied walking in a spectacular corner of Morocco where the Berber way of life has changed little for centuries.
