Antarctic Far East

Not many people visit Antarctica and even fewer visit its remote eastern lands. Sailing from Australia or New Zealand, the Ross Sea is only accessible for two months each year when the ice thaws. It was here that explorers like Scott, Shackleton and Amundsen began their famous expeditions and their historic huts can be visited, as well as the scientific bases in the region. It is also home to millions of Emperor and Adelie Penguins, who spend the summer months breeding here and can regularly be seen. The Subantarctic Auckland, Campbell and Macquarie Islands can also be visited en route. An alternative expedition retraces the adventures of Douglas Mawson and his 1911 Australasian Antarctic Expedition with exploration near Cape Denison close to the South Magnetic Pole.
