How to choose your trip to Peru

Peru is a hugely popular adventure travel destination. Most tours focus on Southern Peru (including Lima, Machu Picchu, the Amazon and Lake Titicaca) with a choice of whether or not to include the four day Inca Trail. Tours focusing on the classic or alternative Inca Trails are also available. The north of Peru is more off the beaten track, with the option of historical discovery or magnificent trekking in the Cordillera Blanca and Huayhuash. Trips to Peru can also be combined with other South American highlights, either Along the Andes or across the continent on the Gringo Trail.

With over 200 holidays to choose from, KE Adventure Travel has one of the very best collections of trekking and walking holidays worldwide. Graded on a scale from 1 to 12, we have holidays to suit everyone. Our tougher treks are likely to involve multi-day hikes through wilderness regions, with porter support and tented accommodation. Whilst at the other end of the scale, our softer walking holidays are more likely to be hotel or lodge-based with a day-walk format and an emphasis on uncovering the area's history, culture and cuisine. From our earliest days we've developed a range of treks that include celebrated classics such as Peru's Inca Trail trek, the ascent of Tanzania's Kilimanjaro and the ever popular Everest Base Camp trek in Nepal. Alongside these, we have always made it a priority to seek out distinctive and unique itineraries in less familiar areas such as Armenia, Cameroon, Madagascar and Burma. Whichever of our trekking or walking holidays you choose to undertake, you can be sure you'll enjoy breaking out of your day-to-day routine and exploring exotic landscapes on foot, with the chance to experience different cultures.

Choquequirao to Machu Picchu Trek

13 days       from  £1445 excl. flights*

Sitting astride a high ridge amongst the snow-capped peaks of Peru, the Inca outpost of Choquequirao is one of the most important discoveries of Inca antiquity. Already a rival to Machu Picchu in terms of its size and splendour, more buildings and llama-decorated terraces are being exposed in Choquequirao each year. Choquequirao is more difficult to access and much less visited than Machu Picchu. Our fully supported trek to this so-called 'Cradle of Gold' in Peru is by way of the awe-inspiring canyon of the Apurimac River, involving a descent and ascent of almost 2000 metres to reach our camp beside the citadel of Choquequirao. We have a full day to explore the Choquequirao site before setting off on a 5-day trek through the rugged and beautiful Cordillera Vilcabamba, a region dominated by impressive 6000 metre peaks including Pumasillo and Salcantay. Following a rarely-used Inca trail which once connected Choquequirao to Machu Picchu, we cross the Totora Pass (4500m) then turn north to descend the Rio Colpa, passing untouched Andean villages whose Quechua inhabitants still wear traditional dress. Arriving at the cloud forest cloaked valley of the Rio Urubamba, this great trip concludes with a guided tour of Machu Picchu and a welcome free day in Cusco. This is a superb holioday in Peru for everyone who loves to follow in the footsteps of the early explorers and for those who want the genuine Inca trail experience but without the crowds. From the beginning of 2014, the Choquequirao to Machu Picchu trekking holiday will be extended by 1 day to become 13 days land only.
