Jordan: Ride Wadi Rum

10 days       from  £1695 excl. flights*
Tour Map of Jordan: Ride Wadi Rum

Jordan - With a history that stretches back to the pages of the Old Testament and a desert landscape that is amongst the most spectacular anywhere in the Middle East, Jordan is a land of incredible contrasts. Along the Jordan Valley and the King’s Highway it is steeped in biblical lore and the chronicles of the Crusades, whilst the imposing majesty of Petra presents us with one of the world’s most magnificent monuments. This incredible adventure takes us deep into the heart of the Hashemite Kingdom, following in the footsteps of the ancient Bedouin and Lawrence of Arabia, as we journey on horseback into the beautiful and evocative landscapes of Wadi Rum. Spending some five hours a day in the saddle, we explore a world that has changed little over the centuries, spending our nights camped beneath a desert sky and our days riding across a land of towering dunes and red cliffs that even Lawrence himself considered to be divine.

With its variety of landscape, wealth of historical sites and welcoming climate (outside of the hot summer months) Jordan is a great place for a multi-activity holiday. This week-long adventure begins with a visit to amazingly well-preserved Roman ruins at Jerash, just north of the capital city of Amman, before traversing the Jordan Valley to take a dip in the ever-so-salty Dead Sea. Next up, we tackle a full day of canyoning in Wadi Mukheries, dropping through a sandstone gorge via small waterfalls and hidden caves, with a final 20 metre abseil. An easy day of cycling then takes us south on country roads between farming villages, with a lunch stop as guests of a family in Mukawir. After hiking in to the amazing rose-red city of Petra via its 'back door', we travel on to Wadi Rum, where we have a camel ride and an exciting scramble up to the Burdah Bridge, a natural rock arch high above the desert sands. This active adventure holiday offers you the chance to get your kicks in Jordan!

Jordan Trekking Holiday - Wadi Rum and Petra

8 days       from  £1075 excl. flights*

Jordan's Wadi Rum and its 'rose-red City' of Petra provide a magical setting for a trekking holiday in the Middle East. Rising abruptly from the desert plains, the red-ochre sandstone mesas of Wadi Rum provide one of the world's most dramatic landscapes. It was famously described by T.E. Lawrence as "Rum the magnificent... vast, echoing and God-like." In this traditional hunting ground of the Bedouin, our 5-day trek will take us on ancient trails through hidden canyons and across open rocky slopes to the summits of several of the biggest formations in Jordan, including Jebel Um Adaami (1832m), Jordan's highest peak. Throughout the trekking holiday, some easy scrambling will be required to get to the best viewpoints and the guide will carry a rope to safeguard exposed sections, such as the final part of the approach to the dramatic Burdah Bridge. Four-wheel-drive vehicles will provide back-up and we will camp each night on the sands in the company of our hospitable Bedouin hosts. A final highlight of this outstanding Arabian adventure holiday is our 2-day visit to the awe-inspiring 2300 year old, rock-hewn city of Petra. Here, we will make our initial approach via the back trail from Little Petra and the fantastic rock-hewm `Monastery` and spend a whole day with a guide at the site. On the final morning of the holiday, we can again walk in to Petra via the amazing chasm of the `Siq` and do some independent sightseeing before transferring back to Amman Airport. Please Note: From JOR.10 (November 2013) the itinerary will be amended to include a camping night above Petra and the day hike to the summit of Petra's holiest peak, Jebel Haroun (1270m).
