Cape Verde Islands lie off the coast of West Africa just south of the Tropic of Cancer. Cape Verde's strategic location at the crossroads of trade routes between Europe, Africa and the Americas led to early colonisation by the Portugese. Today, remnants of this period remain, particularly in the hisoric town of Cidade Velha, while the Creole race that developed between the Portugese and native Africans have created a unique and very hospitable Cape Verdean culture. The islands are also renowned for their spectacular landscapes, from the alpine mountains and deep, green ribeiras of Santo Antao to the volcanic cones and craters of Pico de Fogo. Explore in depth highlights of Cape Verde.
