Aldabra Atoll

Located to the south-east of the Seychelles island group, Aldabra Atoll comprises four large coral islands enclosing a shallow lagoon and surrounded by a coral reef. The atoll's isolation has allowed the population of giant tortoises to thrive, with 152,000 present, the world's largest population of this reptile.

Vallée de Mai Nature Reserve

The Vallée de Mai is a valley in the heart of Praslin National Park on the northern island of Praslin. It is a primeval palm forest in a near natural state, famous for the coco de mer palms that have the largest nuts in the world, as well as the five other species of palm endemic to the Seychelles. Many legends have developed around the coc de mer, perhaps most bizarrely that in the 19th century, the British General Gordon claimed proof that the Vallée de Mai was the Garden of Eden and the coco de mer was the Tree of Knowledge! The national park also contains vanilla orchids, a variety of lizards and rare bird species including the black parrot.

Cousin Island Special Nature Reserve

Cousin Island Special Nature Reserve is noted for its populations of turtles and birds. The turtle species include the Hawksbill turtle and the Green Turtle as well as some Giant Tortoises that have been introduced from the Aldabra Atoll. 52 bird species have been recorded here, with ground-nesting birds flourishing due to the lack of predators. These include Lesser Noddies, Brown Noddies, bridled terns, fairy terns, the Seychelles fody, Madagascar fody, shearwaters and warblers.

Diving and Snorkelling in the Seychelles

The tropical waters surrounding the island of the Seychelles in the Indian Ocean are prime locations for diving and snorkelling. There are crystal clear waters combined with extensive coral reefs and a myriad of fish and marine life. Locations include Baie Ternay Marine Park on the island of Mahé, the waters around Praslin island and the coral reefs surrounding La Digue.

La Digue Island

La Digue is a small, laid back tropical island that offers a beautiful natural landscape and charming isolation. Cars are restricted on the island so the dusty roads can be explored on bicycle or by ox cart - the local taxi. As well as stunning beaches and a coral reef that's rife for underwater exploration, the island has a working coconut plantation and La Digue Vev Reserve, created as a safe haven for the rare and beautiful black paradise flycatcher.
