Cairo is Egypt's capital and Africa's largest city, with a population of over 15 million. Cairo is one of the world's oldest Islamic cities, founded initially in the 7th century after Arab armies entered Egypt. Cairo thrived in the following centuries under various dynasties and rulers including the Fatimids, Saladin, the Mamelukes and the Ottomans. Amidst the vast urban landscape of modern Cairo, much of this historical heritage remains with over 600 classified monuments. These include the 9th century Great Mosque of Ibn-Tulun, the 10th century Mosque of al-Azhar, Saldin's Citadel, the City of the Dead cemetery and the Ottoman Mosque of Mohammed Ali. The Egyptian Museum of Antiquities is a must-see - an incredible collection of relics and artefacts from Egypt's rich history dating back to 4000 BC, including the amazing Tutankhamen treasures.

Day Trip to Alexandria with Lunch

Take a 3hr trip across the desert to Alexandria, ‘The Bride of the Mediterranean Sea’. Head off after breakfast with your English speaking Egyptologist guide and on arrival spend the rest of the morning inside the National Museum which is located in a beautiful restored palace, housing 1,800 artefacts representing Paranoiac, Roman, Coptic and Islamic eras. After lunch there’s time to visit the site of the fort and Citadel of Qaitbay, which was built around 1480 for the Mamluk Sultan Qaitbay from the stones of the Pharaoh’s lighthouse, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. Nearby is a small navel museum, providing a fascinating insight into Nelson's defeat of the Napoleonic fleet right off the coast of Alexandria in 1798. Next is a visit to the Bombay's Pillar which was built in 297 AD for the Roman Emperor Diocletian. The Pillar itself is a 9 meters / 29 feet in circumference and it is said that 22 people could lunch on the ‘capital’ (or flat top) of the Pillar. Then visit to the Catacomb of Komel-Shokafa. These tombs were tunnelled into the bedrock in the age of the Antonine emperors (2nd century A. D.) for a single wealthy family still practicing the ancient religion. These tombs represent the last existing major construction for the sake of the old Egyptian religion. Before heading back to Cairo, take a deep breath and enjoy a walk around the fragrant gardens at the Montazah Summer Palace. Originally built in 1892, this was the summer home of the Egyptian Royal family and is guaranteed to be a special end to your day.
